Western States Motel play an intriguing blend of country and folk with a modern twist.
Try Country and Western Song from their latest full-length Freeway Freeway Riverbend, which sees a release in February 2011. The California natives show traces of classic influences (Hank Williams, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash), in an end product that perhaps falls slightly more into indie-pop territory with its clever use of synth leads and drum machines.
It’s a deceptively simple and straight forward tune that bounces along on a great rhythm and has quickly grown to be a firm favourite here at the Mackerel abode.
