Both Mrs Mackerel and I were much saddened by the recent demise of duo the Dutchess & The Duke. Over the two albums they released together their special brand of folk harmonies and brilliant lyrical wordplay was a consistent joy to listen to.
The first new activity to rise from these ashes is Case Studies, a new project from Jesse Lortz (aka The Duke), and his debut record is called The World Is Just a Shape to Fill the Night and it’s out August 16 on Sacred Bones. Obviously there is much that is familiar, particularly the lyrics with the trademark black humour that can happily dip its toes in to the territory of the macabre on occasion, and the lazy strummed acoustics that provide the perfect foil for Lortz’s bourbon-smooth vocals.
Have a listen and go some way to filling the fill the void left behind by the Dutchess & The Duke.
