Mrs Mackerel’s TFI Saturday (10th December)

Mrs Mackerel's TFI Saturday (10th December). It’s been a long, tiring and sad week. Death is all around, so it seems. And even when you’re viewing it in the third person, it’s hard to watch. It settles over you with a deft hand, weighting its heaviness into your head and inevitably your heart. Yet still the world continues to turn; life does go on for the rest of us, so it seems.

Where does it leave those in the inner circle of grief? Suffocating, slow and leaden. With Christmas lights twinkling all around, I’m sure seasonal cheer in all its lurid kitsch and sparkle must be a bit choking.

Life after death is always sharper, colder and slower. Time accelerates and slows down at the same time. Each day passes at a plodding pace taking you further and further from the one you want, who spitefully seem to have sped away from life’s party in a taxi that left years ago. And really, all I can do is watch the wreckage from a distance and try and offer what I can.

Hear the trumpets, hear the pipers

One hundred million angels singing

Multitudes are marching to the big kettledrum

Voices calling and voices crying

Some are born and some are dying

It’s Alpha and Omega’s kingdom come.

(The Man Comes Around, Johnny Cash.)

It’ll be Christmas covers next week, just you wait and see.
