Authentic, Delta-blues maverick Brother Dege is currently spending his time recording songs for his new album How To Kill A Horse in an empty warehouse, working in a homeless shelter, and disappearing for days into the backwoods of his native Louisiana.
All par for the course for the follow-up to the critically-acclaimed full-length album Folk Songs of the American Longhair, which was voted one of the top blues and roots albums of 2010 in Europe and the U.S. and was a well established favourite here at MM.
Brother Dege is offering up Wehyah as the first taste from the new record – somehow managing to perfectly meld the traditional slide-blues playing of Blind Willie Johnson and Bukka White with the post-rock squall of Sonic Youth. The results are mighty powerful, and will more than likely hurl your speakers, shaking and shuddering, into a primal swamp-blues abyss from which they’ll never return.
You have been warned…
